AI for Retail: Product Content, Support and Demand Signals
Retail is where AI pays back fastest on high-volume work nobody enjoys: product descriptions across thousands of SKUs, first-line answers to the same twenty questions, and translating a catalogue for a second market. Where it disappoints is demand forecasting, which is what most retailers ask for first. Forecasting needs clean and sufficient sales history, and a business whose stock figures disagree between channels does not have that yet. The sequence matters more than the model.
What usually breaks here
- Stock accuracy breaking down between shopfloor, warehouse and website
- Orders arriving from marketplace, web and WhatsApp with manual consolidation
- Marketing spend rising while attribution stays a mystery
- Promotions decided on instinct because sales data is unreadable
What changes
- Document extraction that reads PDFs, images and emails and posts structured data for human approval
- An assistant grounded in your real documentation that answers instantly and hands off to humans gracefully
- Generated first drafts from live data — humans review, not assemble
- Automatic triage, tagging and routing with sentiment and urgency detection
- AI-assisted translation and adaptation pipelines with human editorial control
Questions we get from this sector
Yes, and it is one of the clearest wins in retail — but from structured attributes rather than from a product name. Given real specifications it produces consistent, searchable copy at a scale no copywriter matches economically. Given only a title it produces confident invention, which is worse than an empty field.
It will if it stands between them and a person. Handling order status, returns policy and stock questions is genuine relief on both sides; refusing to escalate is what generates complaints. We set the handover rule explicitly and watch the escalation rate, because a suspiciously low one usually means people are trapped.
Often not yet. It wants a couple of years of clean sales history and accurate stock data, and most retailers we meet have neither. Fixing stock accuracy first usually delivers more margin than the forecasting model would, and it is a prerequisite for the forecast anyway.
