Custom Software for Education: The Process No Package Fits
Most institutions do not need custom software, and we say so before quoting. The exception is the process that is genuinely yours: an unusual assessment model, a scholarship or bursary calculation nobody else runs, a multi-campus timetable with real constraints. Those are the places where configuring a package means annual workarounds and a growing pile of exported spreadsheets. Questions we get from this sector
Ask whether the process is a differentiator or an accident of history. If a package can absorb it with configuration and a small change in habit, configure. If matching it requires exports, parallel spreadsheets and an annual workaround, the workaround is already costing more than the build would.
This is the real risk with bespoke systems, and it is a documentation and stack question rather than a code one. We build on mainstream technology with a large hiring pool, hand over written documentation and the repository, and make sure another firm could pick it up without archaeology.
