For most institutions, a student-management platform with finance attached fits better than a general ERP bent into shape. The exception is a group running shared procurement, payroll and multiple campuses, where the finance backbone genuinely benefits from a full ERP with a student module layered on top of it.
Through a portal that reads the same records staff maintain, rather than a second system someone updates separately. Done properly it removes work instead of adding it: the phone calls asking for results, fee balances and attendance are the ones a portal answers without a member of staff picking up.
They migrate, but selectively. We move active students, open balances and the statutory retention set in full, and archive the rest in a searchable read-only form rather than paying to clean twenty years of inconsistent paper records into a live database nobody will query after the first term.
