Analytics for Manufacturing: Margin, Scrap and Stock Cover
Manufacturing usually has more data than anyone reports on and less trust in it than any other sector. Machine logs, production records and stock movements exist; what is missing is agreement about what a unit actually costs once scrap, rework and downtime are included. Until that number is agreed, every efficiency debate is opinion. The first engagement is normally about defining and reconciling a handful of measures, not about building screens, and it is far less glamorous than clients expect.
What usually breaks here
- Production planning that lives in one planner's head and one master spreadsheet
- Raw-material purchasing driven by stockouts rather than reorder logic
- Costing that discovers margin after the order ships, not before it is quoted
- Delivery promises made without visibility of capacity or stock
What changes
- Live dashboards refreshed automatically from source systems
- Conversion tracking from first touch to invoice, GDPR-conscious by design
- Agreed definitions and one metrics layer everyone reads from
- Attribution reporting tied to actual sales, not platform-reported conversions
- Threshold alerts on the metrics that matter — margins, stock cover, pipeline
Questions we get from this sector
Usually yes for costing and stock, because that is where the data lives and where definitions get settled. Machine-level analytics on downtime and scrap can start earlier and stand alone, since the shop floor data does not depend on the finance system being coherent.
Few things, updated reliably: output against plan, scrap rate, downtime by cause, and stock cover on critical materials. Dashboards fail from crowding more than from missing metrics, and a screen nobody trusts is worse than no screen because it invites private spreadsheets.
Sometimes through existing PLC or OPC interfaces, sometimes with retrofitted sensors, and sometimes by accepting operator entry at a small number of points. We assess what each line can realistically provide before designing anything, because the machine population is what sets the ceiling.
