ERP for Manufacturing: Stock, BOM and Margin You Can Trust
Manufacturing is where an ERP either earns its cost or exposes how little anyone trusted the numbers. The hard part is rarely finance — it is the bill of materials. Most factories we walk into keep three versions: the one in the system, the one the production supervisor works from, and the one the buyer actually orders against. Until those three agree, costing is fiction and every delivery date is a guess dressed up as a commitment. We start there, not with the accounting module.
What usually breaks here
- Production planning that lives in one planner's head and one master spreadsheet
- Raw-material purchasing driven by stockouts rather than reorder logic
- Costing that discovers margin after the order ships, not before it is quoted
- Delivery promises made without visibility of capacity or stock
What changes
- Live inventory with reservations, reorder points and warehouse-accurate availability
- Continuous bookkeeping with automated postings — closing in days, not weeks
- One shared database where a customer, product or invoice exists exactly once
- Defined workflows with audit trails: who approved what, when, and why
- Dashboards on live data — margins, cash, stock turns — available every morning
Questions we get from this sector
For a single-site manufacturer of roughly 50 to 300 staff, expect four to seven months from process mapping to go-live, with the pilot running one production line before the rest follows. Multi-site operations or heavy customisation push past nine months. Anyone quoting six weeks is selling you a licence, not an implementation.
In the ERP, and it is usually the hardest part of the project. A spreadsheet BOM cannot enforce revision control, so purchasing orders against last quarter's version and the costing never reconciles. We rehearse the BOM migration on a staging system until production and purchasing agree on one version, then cut over.
Yes — Odoo and ERPNext both support mixed-mode manufacturing and most of our clients run both. The real work is in reorder rules and capacity planning, because the two modes compete for the same materials and machine hours. That trade-off has to be decided by your planners, not defaulted by the software.
